BOX 31

BREAKFAST IN BED

The male rarely enters the box to feed the female. She usually prefers to be fed threw the entry hole. But in this case the female made an exception. Especially when a particularly juice mealworm is being presented to her in the beak of the male bluebird.

FIRST BORN

The first chick hatched on May 29th. It is too small to see clearly but there is definitely movement in the nest and it's bothers and sisters will soon join him. (a) is pointing to the first born chick. It has it's head over the other eggs. (b) is pointing to the next chick as it is about to hatch. You can see the hole where the chick is pecking out. When a chick exits the egg the parents will remove the empty egg shell.

And Then There Were Two

The second chick (b) hatched very soon after the first (a).

Male Removing Empty Egg Shell From Nest

The parents seemed to assist the chicks out of the egg once the chick had made the initial effort. We noticed that the chick had not exited the egg shell before we saw a parent with an egg shell in it's beak. Therefore we came to the conclusion that parental assistance was taking place.
