WHAT IS A LIST SERVER?: A list allows discussions among a group of people, but instead of sending a message to one person, you send the message to an e-mail address for the list. The message is then redistributed to everyone who reads (or subscribes) to the list.

DIGESTS: Mail lists can be busy places and some subscribers may not have the time to deal with individual messages or may prefer to receive groups of messages all at once. Digests address this by collecting messages over a period of time and then sending the group of messages in a single message. Subscribers to digests receive the digest according a specific schedule(1 each day). Each digest contains a table of contents at the top of the message. The table of contents is derived from the subject of each message in the digest.

INDEX: A list index message contains the same digest header, the table of contents (TOC) listing all the messages in the digest, but it does not contain the posted messages themselves. List index messages are created at the same time the list digest messages are created. INDEX user would use thier web browser to access the archive to read messages.

SENDING MESSAGES: After a user has subscribed to a list, they can send messages to the list. The message is received by the list server and then sent to all members of the list including the original author.
