would agree to manage this individual. Some duties could be done remotely
therefore not requiring travel to the James Reserve on a daily basis..

Job Description
The position has been created to provide assistance
to the UCNRS Information Manager and thus to the UCNRS reserve system throughout
the state of California. The projects that will be provided encompass advance
network installation in remote locations as well as computer database, web
programming and network support.
This individual would need to be near the UCNRS reserve where that reserve
manager would be willing to manage this individual, in this case the James
Reserve. Many functions of this position can be done remotely, but
the UCNRS Information Manager would like to have weekly scheduled face to
face contact with the individual if possible which would require traveling
to the James Reserve. UCNRS reserves are remote locations and the individual
should be comfortable in these environmental conditions. The applicant will
be under the direct supervision of the UCNRS Information Manager and also
co-supervised by the resident reserve director.
Travel will be required in order to get to the
many UCNRS reserves that the Information Manager works with. A valid CA driver's
license is a requirement for this position and the individual must be willing
to drive long distances. A travel budget will be provided to assist with
the costs of transportation that is calculated by the mileage, food, and
accommodation. These trips can last as long as 2 or 3 weeks in length thus
the applicant must be comfortable leaving their home for long periods of
time.
The first part of this position involves the
planning and deployment of network infrastructures at a reserve. Applicant
should have the skills of a Network Resource Specialists in order to provide
a wide range of technical and consultative services in the design, acquisition,
installation / configuration, operation and maintenance of networks. They
would need to provide expertise in wireless network RF and architectural
protocols (i.e. point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, mesh), as well as data
aspects of networks while working at different reserves. Incumbents may also
serve in a project engineer/project manager capacity where they will be expected
to design, implement, and document their procedures.
The second part of the responsibilities of the
Network Resource Specialists position will be to serve in the capacity of
Computer Resource Specialists. This may include database entry, web site
maintenance, and network troubleshooting. They will perform data mining for
meta data at each reserve as well as working with NCEAS to facilitate with
data entry. Also,150 they will be assisting the Information Manager is the
transition of an online application system and other web based tools to a
different platform environment. A working knowledge of MYSQL, PHP,
HTML and AJAX will be necessary to accomplish this. Incumbents typically
are responsible for day-to-day computer and network administration at a home
facility and assisting with network troubleshooting support at other reserves.
They may also be taking on other reserves' networking projects on an as needed
basis and per availability which will dependant on that reserve's budget.
Minimum qualifications: BS. A working knowledge
of MySQL and web based programming. Experience with PHP programming, Javascript
and AJAX web page architecture. Skills of a Network Resource Specialists
in order to provide a wide range of technical and consultative services in
the design, acquisition, installation / configuration, operation and maintenance
of networks. As many of the projects are in remote areas, fairly extensive
travel is required. Must have a valid driver's license and transportation.
Incumbents must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
and an ability to work in small teams. Must have access to a personal computer.
Experienced in web site development and maintenance. Incumbents are expected
to possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful
performance of the duties assigned to the positions and willing to learn
new skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of Apache
server administration on Macintosh servers, and Windows server maintenance.
Familiarity with Filemaker database management and LASSO. Working knowledge
of Content Management System CMS web page architecture and management.
Geographic Information System (GIS) applications like ArcInfo also a preferred
skill.
